This page explains exactly how SturdyRide produces its guides and reviews, so you can decide how much weight to give them.
Research-based, not lab-tested
Our current articles are research-based. That means we compile and compare information from published sources rather than from our own riding or lab measurements. When an article is based on hands-on use, it will say so clearly at the top. Until then, assume it is not.
Where our information comes from
- Manufacturer documents: product pages, owner’s manuals and support articles, especially for payload capacity, rider weight limits, rack ratings, motor and battery specs, and certifications.
- Standards and regulators: UL Standards & Engagement (UL 2849), the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and published e-bike law resources such as PeopleForBikes.
- Independent reviews and owner reports: reputable review outlets, owner forums and long-term user reports. We treat these as reports, not facts, and look for patterns across many sources rather than single anecdotes.
What we look at for heavy-duty e-bikes
- How the weight limit is defined. Is it total payload or rider only? Does the brand publish a separate rider cap and rack limits? Is any frame test standard named?
- Safety certification. Is the electrical system certified to UL 2849 (or the battery to UL 2271) by a recognised lab?
- Components that take the load: brakes (hydraulic vs mechanical, rotor size), wheels and spokes, tires, and suspension and whether it suits heavier riders.
- Practicalities: bike weight, frame sizes and rider height range, step-through options, legal class, and parts and service support.
- Owner-reported reliability where enough reports exist.
Accuracy and updates
Specs change and brands update models often. We note when we checked information, link to the source, and update articles when we learn something has changed. If you find a mistake, please tell us and we’ll fix it.
